Bong County Senator and Chair of the Bong Legislative Caucus, Prince K. Moye, says China Union is indebted to Bong County in the amount of US$4 million due to the company’s failure to pay the needed social benefits to the county. Senator Moye told reporters on Capitol Hill on Thursday, February 15, 2024 that China Union allegedly entered into a closed, back door agreement with the Minister of Finance during the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government to cut off all social benefits belonging to Bong County.

According to the Bong County Senator, the alleged arrangement between China Union and Finance Minister is totally off the mineral development agreement (MDA) between the Government of Liberia (GOL) and the company. He said there is an existing agreement between China Union and the government, and therefore any arrangement to cut off Bong County’s social benefits is illegal. The Senate Chair on Ways, Means and Finance Committee further explained that since the company allegedly cut off the benefit payment, the amount has accumulated to US$4 million, which he said will be requested to be paid under the Unity Party government.

The Bong Legislative Caucus’ chairman vowed that, under the Boakai and Koung administration, he will go after any funds legitimately belonging to Bong County. He assured the people of Bong County of a united and reconciled caucus under his chairmanship. With unity, he indicated, members of the Bong Legislative caucus can transform the county in collaboration with the county’s authorities.

He maintained that all members of the caucus have been placed on committees for the progress of the county, and applauded his colleagues for reposing such confidence in him to chair the Bong County Legislative Caucus in the 55th Legislature. He praised the out-going Chairperson of the caucus, Representative Maima Briggs Mensah, for handling the affairs of the caucus for the past six years.

He assured accountability and transparency during his administration as Chair and Senator Johnny Kpehe as Co-chair, and promised that running the county affairs will no more be business as usual, especially under the Boakai and Koung administration.
