Rep. Richard N. Koon

The plenary of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 cited the management of the National Disaster Management Agency of Liberia for its failure to promptly respond to storm victims’ need in Montserrado County’s districts #11, #6 and #13 since April 2020. The House’s decision to cite the agency’s management came as a result of a communication from Montserrado County’s district #11 Representative, Richard N. Koon.

Representative Koon wrote the plenary of the House seeking its indulgence to have the management of the National Disaster Management Agency invited to appear before the full plenary of the House to show reason why the agency responsible for disaster intervention across the country has not responded to a disaster that took place in district #11, #13 and #6, Montserrado County.

According to Representative Koon, since the disaster hit in April, the agency is yet to visit the mentioned districts. He averred that his office officially wrote the agency, informing them about the incident in his district since April. The Montserrado County lawmaker revealed that the institution, which is funded by the government, has refused to honor his communication, thus causing him to write the plenary of the House of Representatives to have the agency invited.

Koon claimed that the failure of the agency to quickly respond to disaster activities across the country should be taken into consideration and, as such, the intervention of the House is necessary. He pointed out that the disrespectful attitude of the agency to his office by not responding to his request is punishable.

Following the reading of the communication from the district #11 Representative, members of the House of Representatives endorsed the communication and agreed that the management of the agency appear before the full plenary on today, Tuesday, July 7, 2020.
