THE BOARD OF Trustees of the University of Liberia, concerned about the wave of student violence on the campuses of the University of Liberia (UL), has instructed the UL administration to suspend all student political activities. The UL Board said after reviewing recent incidents of violence on the Capitol Hill and Fendall campuses, it reaffirms its decision of 2024 to suspend all student political activities on campus.

THE BOARD SAID it has taken this decision due to on-going disruptions to academic activities and persistent student violence on the university campuses. It revealed that recent incidents, occurring on September 1, 2025 and September 11, 2025, have led to clashes between students and security personnel on the Capitol Hill campus and have disrupted student orientation at Fendall campus.

THE BOARD HAS, consequently, directed the UL administration to “suspend all students involved in the incidents from September 1, 2025 and September 11, 2025 immediately, in accordance with the provisions of the Student Handbook, pending a detailed investigation; establish a strong Standing Disciplinary Committee immediately to enforce the Student Handbook; conclude on-going negotiations with the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA), noting that the UL administration has already addressed many of their demands in good faith; commence classes immediately to enable the university to start the current term; and begin renovations of critical facilities, starting with bathrooms, without delay.”

HOWEVER, IN WHAT appears as a confrontational response to the decision of the UL Board, SUP has insisted that it will continue with its planned protest. “…Monday, September 15, the Student Unification Party-SUP will stage a peaceful protest on the Capitol Hill Campus to demand immediate change regarding issues facing students and faculty at the University of Liberia. SUP calls on all students, ideologues, and masses of the people to join us in defending social justice, academic freedom, and peace,” SUP announced.

SUP SAID IT condemns the Boakai administration’s attempts to sponsor thugs posing as a “student group” to disrupt their action. “Our protest is in line with Article 17 of the Liberian Constitution and international laws guaranteeing peaceful assembly. SUP invites the media, civil society, and the international community,” SUP noted. “The Vanguard Party remains committed to protecting the rights of students and masses of the people without giving in to any intimidation.”
