Several climate and environmental organizations have come together to form the National Alliance of Climate and Environmental NGOs of Liberia (NACEL). This initiative aims at promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship throughout the country.

The alliance highlights the urgent need for increased environmental awareness and action to tackle the significant ecological challenges facing Liberia today. Through collaboration, these organizations seek to foster integrity and accountability in environmental efforts, ensuring a healthier future for all.

As Liberia grapples with deforestation, pollution, and climate change impacts, this collective effort serves as a vital wake-up call. The alliance encourages every citizen to take responsibility for their environment, advocating for a united approach to protect Liberia’s ecosystems for future generations. By raising awareness and fostering collaboration, this initiative hopes to inspire a movement that prioritizes environmental health as a cornerstone of national development.

The National Alliance of Climate and Environmental NGOs of Liberia (NACEL) was officially launched on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the ICampus in Monrovia. The event was attended by representatives from the U.S. Embassy, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Monrovia City Government, distinguished guests, and various civil society organizations.

Providing an overview of the program, Tundy R. Tarn, Chairman of NACEL and Executive Director of the Climate and Environmental Protection Initiative of Liberia (CEPIL), shared that on April 10, 2024 a group of visionary leaders convened to establish a transformative alliance. This collaboration led to the formation of NACEL, the National Alliance of Climate and Environmental NGOs.

Tarn emphasized that NACEL is dedicated to uniting efforts across various sectors to address climate change and promote sustainable environmental practices in Liberia. The coalition aims to enhance advocacy, share resources, and foster community engagement to create lasting environmental impact. Through collective action, NACEL aspires to build a resilient future for Liberia, ensuring that environmental sustainability remains a priority in national development.

“This alliance represents a significant milestone in our collective efforts to address the pressing environmental challenges facing our nation,” Tarn noted.

According to him, NACEL aims to promote environmental awareness, advocate for policy change, support conservation efforts, and empower local communities. The organization believes that, through collaboration and innovation, it can create a sustainable and resilient Liberia. By fostering a collective commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action, NACEL envisions communities thriving in harmony with nature while preserving the country’s natural heritage for future generations. This holistic approach emphasizes the importance of local engagement and the active participation of all stakeholders in achieving these vital goals.

This institution aligns with the ARREST agenda, particularly Pillar 2, which focuses on health, water, sanitation, the environment, and climate change. Many Liberians currently lack access to safely managed drinking water, sanitation services, and climate education.

NACEL Chairman added that the organization is committed to developing and maintaining a healthy environment while collaborating with the government to implement effective policies on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) at both local and national levels. This commitment aims to improve public health and ensure that all communities have access to essential services, fostering resilience and sustainability across the nation.

Representing the embassy of the United States in Liberia, Moses Zangar, Jr., Public Engagement Specialist, expressed the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental stewardship and resilience within Liberia. He emphasized the critical importance of addressing climate change and environmental issues, highlighting that joint efforts are essential for fostering a sustainable future.

He termed it a worldwide initiative, stating, “We will be here whenever you need our support; just let us know.”

The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, acknowledged the launch of this vital National Environmental NGO Alliance of Liberia at a time when the need for environmental protection is more urgent. He highlighted the critical role that NACEL will play in mobilizing efforts to address pressing environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard Liberia’s natural resources and promote sustainable development.

Proxy of the EPA Executive Director, Desmond T. Thompson, Project Liaison Officer in the Office of the EPA Director, stated, “The Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia recognizes the critical contributions that NGOs make in ensuring that environmental policies are not only created but implemented effectively. We are committed to fostering a collaborative environment where government, civil society, and private sector actors can work hand in hand for the good of our people and planet.”

James A.B. Brown III, Technical Assistant Officer of the Monrovia City Mayor, expressed the city’s commitment to supporting NACEL, emphasizing that civil society organizations play a crucial role in amplifying voices on environmental issues.

In separate remarks, several organizations commended NACEL for its launch and expressed hopes for collaborative efforts to ensure its success. They highlighted the shared goal of making Monrovia one of the cleanest cities in the world, underscoring the importance of unity and joint action in achieving this vision.
