As Liberians celebrate another Decoration Day, it is imperative that we reflect on the importance of honoring our deceased historical figures. Despite being the oldest nation in Africa, Liberia lacks a national cemetery to pay tribute to the sacrifices of our forebears.

The Need for a National Cemetery
A national cemetery would serve as a sacred space to commemorate the lives and contributions of Liberia’s most revered citizens. It would be a symbol of national pride, unity, and respect for those who have shaped our nation’s history.

The Palm Groves Cemetery: A Relocation Imperative
The Palm Groves Cemetery in Monrovia, established in 1912, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Liberia. However, due to urbanization and infrastructure development, it has become necessary to relocate the cemetery. This relocation would not only make way for development but also provide an opportunity to create a more dignified and accessible resting place for our loved ones.

International Precedents
Many developed nations have successfully relocated cemeteries to accommodate urban growth and development. For example, in the United States, the relocation of cemeteries has been a common practice, with notable examples including the relocation of the Old City Cemetery in Philadelphia. Similarly, in Europe, many cemeteries have been relocated to make way for urban development, such as the relocation of the Cimetière des Innocents in Paris.

A Proposal for the Relocated Palm Groves Cemetery Site
After relocating the Palm Groves Cemetery, I propose that the site be repurposed as a public transportation station. This would provide a central hub for buses and taxis, improving transportation infrastructure and reducing congestion in Monrovia.

Conclusion
As we celebrate Decoration Day, let us remember the sacrifices of our forebears and honor their memories by establishing a national cemetery. The relocation of the Palm Groves Cemetery presents an opportunity to create a more dignified resting place for our loved ones and to develop a public transportation hub that will benefit the citizens of Monrovia.

Let us come together to make this vision a reality and to show our respect for those who have shaped our nation’s history.
