EU Commits €191M To Liberia
President George Manneh Weah’s trip to the European Union-African Union Summit on February 18—18, 2022 in Brussels, Belgium, has yielded fruitful and rewarding results, as EU commits €191 million to Liberia for the next four years.
After his meeting with the EU Commissioner, Jutta Urpilainen, President Weah disclosed that the EU has committed €191 million to Liberia, and that the envelope will affect the forestry sector, food system, electoral process and vocational education.
On his official Facebook page, President Weah noted that the EU has begun to engage the Government of Liberia (GOL) on fulfilling its commitment of €80 million for this year.
It can be recalled that on February 16, 2022 President Weah departed the country to attend the sixth European Union-African Union Summit in Brussels, Belgium.
The Summit, which ran from February 17–18, 2022, brought together leaders of the European and African Unions as well as their respective member states.
The Liberian Chief Executive met other world leaders on the margin of the summit in a bid to strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations.
The summit presented a unique opportunity for participating countries and organizations to lay the foundations for a renewed and deeper AU-EU partnership with the highest political involvement based on trust and a clear understanding of mutual interests.
African and European Leaders discussed matters relating to how the two continents can build greater prosperity by launching an ambitious Africa-Europe Investment Package, taking into account global challenges such as climate change, the current health crisis and solutions needed to promote stability and security through a renewed peace and security architecture.
A series of thematic roundtables were organized and debated, including growth financing, health systems and vaccine production, agriculture and sustainable development, education, culture and vocational training, migration and mobility.
