Liberia’s astute stateswoman and renowned educator, the late Mary Brownell, affectionately known as Ma Mary, fifth home-going anniversary will be observed later this week.

Mother Brownell died in 2017 at the John F. Kennedy Hospital, after a brief illness at age 88.

According to a dispatch from the senior daughter and veteran Liberian Musician and prolific song writer, Miatta Fahnbulleh, the event will commence on Saturday, March 12, 2022, which will be Ma Mary’s 93 birth anniversary.

A candlelight ceremony will be held at her residence on Ashmun Street, Monrovia, at which time the Forum of Liberian Women will be installed into office, disclosed Miatta Fahnbulleh.

At the same time, the Ma-Mary Place will be opened.

The dispatch indicated that the activities will continue on Sunday, the 13th , when a thanksgiving service will be held at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Camp Johnson Road, Monrovia. Thereafter, the sympathizers will proceed to Cintalin, Margibi County, for wreath laying ceremony.

According to the protocol, the activities will continue with a symposium at the AME Graduate School Hall, Camp Johnson Road, on Monday, March 14 at 3:00 p.m., ending at 4:00 p.m., to be graced by high-profiled personalities, guests and well-wishers.

The late Mother Brownell served as classroom teacher for decades and later became principal for the Boatswain Elementary School on Jamaica Road and the Bong Town Community School in Bong Mines, Bong County.

She also served as head of a women’s group, Liberian Women Initiatives, which fought for the rights of women during the Liberian civil upheaval that brought peace to Liberia.

Ma Mary also served as one of the commissioners at the National Elections Commission (NEC).
