A Gambian national claiming to be the country’s acting consul general in Liberia, Ishmael Sesay, is due to appear before the West Point Magisterial Court Monday of next week in connection with the sale of an alleged fake diamond to a buyer in Monrovia

Ishmael Sesay fraudulently sold the stone weighing 7.21 carat to one Solomon Kamara, said to be a resident of Monrovia, on June 6, 2025 for US$10,845 (ten thousand eight hundred and forty-five United States dollars)

However, when the diamond was later tested by the buyer it was discovered that the gem was fake with no value. Without delay Solomon Kamara said he immediately returned the diamond and requested the seller to give him back his money.

The complainant told the Hot Pepper that he was forced to file a lawsuit against the Gambian national after he refused to comply with his demand.

He stated that defendant Sesay kept insisting that the stone he sold to him was pure diamond.

The lawyer representing the defendant said the judge of the West Point Magisterial Court has since issued an arrest warrant for Ishmael Sesay and one Ousman Sesay, said to be an accomplice to the crime after the lawsuit was filed.

Cllr. Togba told the Hot Pepper that hearing into the matter is scheduled for Monday next week, at which time the two defendants will appear for trial.

According to Cllr. Togba, the judge also requested defendant Ishmael Sesay submits all documents relating to his appointment as Acting Consul General of Gambia in Liberia.

He noted that the request for Sesay’s diplomatic credentials follows report that the defendant is hiding behind the title of consul general to engage in illegal mining and other activities in the host country.

The defendant has so far made no comment regarding charges levied against him in court and the faking of diplomatic title. Investigations continue.
