The Government of Liberia (GOL), through the Ministry of Justice’s Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation (BCR), has officially issued a permit to the Muslim Teachers Assembly (MTA) to do evangelism nationwide to inmates.

The disclosure of the granting of the permit to the Muslim Teachers Assembly by the Ministry of Justice to evangelize inmates at various prison centers across the country was disclosed by the organization’s Chairman\Chief Imam, Alhaji Alieu Sesay, in an interview recently with the Hot Pepper in Monrovia.

Imam Sesay went on, “The granting of the Muslim Teachers Assembly permit by authorities of the Ministry of Justice was prompted by the organization’s hard work and visit\tour by our various county Imams and teachers of prison centers in Liberia.”

He used the occasion to extend the organization’s thanks and appreciation to the Government of Liberia (GOL) for the granting of its official permit, and said this move will further lead to the concretization of cordial ties between his entity and the Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Justice.

On the issue of pre-trial detainees, Imam Sesay quotes the Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation (BCR), a division of the Ministry of Justice, as saying that every day the number of inmates can be increased or decreased, as reflected on the bulletin of the Justice Ministry.

According to the BCR’s statistics, Imam Sesay added, the total number of inmates is put at 3,500. Among these, he disclosed, are 290 Muslims; 3,000 males and 500 females, who are being detained for the commitment of different crimes, such as, murders, human trafficking, kidnapping, rape, aggravated assault, and theft of property, among others.

Imam Sesay revealed that at the end of this year’s Holy Month of Ramadan the Muslim Teachers Assembly team successfully evangelized scores of these inmates from the perspective of the Holy Koran during the team’s visitation at various prison compounds nationwide.
