Greenville, Sinoe County, has a new City Mayor: Harrison O. Kai, replacing the former Mayor, Otis Seton.
The new Greenville City Mayor, Kai, was nominated by President Joseph Nyuma Boakia, Sr. sometime in March of this year, and appointed on July 11, 2024 following his confirmation by the Liberian Senate alongside the Sinoe Superintendent of Fiscal Affairs and County Inspector.
Kai did not readily name the two local government officials appointed by the Liberian leader when interviewed by the Hot Pepper in Monrovia.
In his green letter of appointment, dated July 11, 2024, President Boakai opines, “Dear Hon. Kai: With the consent of the Senate, I am pleased to appoint you as Mayor of Greenille City, Sinoe County, Ministry of Internal Affairs.”
“Your appointment,” President Boakai told Greenville Mayor Kai, “is based on your ability, integrity and wealth of experience, and we trust you will continue to demonstrate these qualities in service on the job, to your people and country. Congratulations! Sincerely, Joseph N. Boakai, Sr.”
Asked whether he has taken over the gavel of authority as City Mayor of Greenville, Sinoe County, Kai said not actually, but was quick to add that his induction ceremony in the county’s capital is slated for today, July 29, 2024.
On his plan of action when inducted as mayor, the local government official disclosed that Greenville is the third original city of the Republic of Liberia, but under-developed.
He recalled that in the 1980s Greenville used to boom in terms of agricultural activities, as students from the southeastern part of the nation were hired by potential farmers to work at their farms to make ends meet during the weekend.
Disgustingly, Mayor Kai revealed, to date, infrastructures are said to be in ruin, and sea erosion is gradually taking over the city.
He said he contemplates, when sworn in office, to work with the Sinoe County Legislative Caucus with the oversight responsibility to put money in the national budget as county development fund so that “we can transform Greenville City, give it a total facelift, thus returning it to its pre-war status as the third original city of Liberia”.
He said he will also be working with the youths, market women, elders, companies, members of business community, citizenry and the city council, among others, in giving Greenville a new face. He promised to, as well, re-open roads which are not pliable in the city.
Mayor Kai then decried the deplorable condition of the city hall in Greenville which, he voiced, is said to be lying in ruins and without chairs, desks, computer and furniture for the smooth running of his office.
Already, Mayor Kai disclosed, Sinoe County Senator, Crayton Duncan, has promised to make available about 500 wooden chairs for use by the city hall when it is renovated.
“With the support of the Sinoe Legislative Caucus, the citizens and local leadership, Greenville City will be transformed into a modern city,” Mayor assured.
