The leadership of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), headed by Colonel Elijah F. Rufus, has embarked on a nationwide registration for Burkinabes living in Liberia.

The issue of Burkinabes illegally residing in Liberia has drawn serious attention recently, and cannot be over emphasized due to their increased in number across the country.

According to report, there are thousands of Burkinabes living in Liberia without going through the LIS formalities for entering Liberia. Because of their alarming number, authorities of the LIS decided to embark on the registration to know the total amount of Burkinabes in Liberia.

Information gathered from the LIS notes that phase one of the registration has kicked off in southwestern Liberia, with thousands of Burkinabes turning out to be registered.

The LIS phase one of the Burkinabes registration covers Grand Gedeh, Maryland, River Gee, Nimba and Bong counties.

According to information gathered from local county authorities, each of the five counties targeted for the first phase of the nationwide Burkinabes registration has thousands of Burkinabes residing there illegally.

Under the ECOWAS free movement of citizens, the move by the LIS was designed to know the total number of Burkinabes in Liberia, in order to allow them to do the rightful thing in line with immigration best practices globally.

Since the process started, Liberians there have begun expressing words of appreciation to the LIS for the initiative.
