The Director General of the Liberia Standard Authority (LiSA) says the Liberia Standard Act is a law that established a national standard body called the LiSA. Stephen Y. Mambu said the major responsibilities for national standards and other trade-facilitated services in areas is to provide conformity, assessment and testing, inspection, certification and metrology.

Speaking during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 Director Mambu said the Liberia Standards Act is necessary in order to meet Liberia’s need for a sound national quality infrastructure to achieve its strategic economic goals.

According to him, the Liberia Standard Act provides essential legal and administrative framework for the establishment of the Liberia Standard Authority.

Stephen Y. Mambu highlighted the important roles the Liberia Standard Authority plays in the economy: provision of the country’s quality infrastructure for facilitation of trade.

He said in the present era of trade globalization, market entry requires compliance to international standards and evidence of such compliance through recognized standards measurement system and conformity assessment.

He said in the SMEs, a functioning quality infrastructure helps increases productivity in manufacturing and service delivery and helps create jobs, encourage investment and can promote the careful use of natural resources.

“This entity was established by the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, with overwhelming support of the private sector, development partners and the ECOWAS. The drafted, validated and submitted act of the Liberia Standards Authority of 2018 was passed into law in 2022 and operationalized in 2024.

It has been recognized that this calls for a strong national quality infrastructure to support industry trade environments and consumer health and safety in the country. It is imperative to put in place measures and institutional mechanisms to ensure that all goods and services for domestic and international markets meet requires quality, environment, health and safety standards, thereby strongly contributing to government’s sustainable development.
