The leadership of the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA), through its President, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, says it strongly condemns the violent attack on the residence of His Honor Roosevelt Z. Willie, Resident Circuit Judge of Criminal Court “A”, Montserrado County, Republic of Liberia.

According to a LNBA press release, issued June 26, 2025, in the late evening hours of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, a group of unidentified individuals, armed with machetes and sticks and riding motorcycles, attempted to forcefully enter the judge’s premises. According to credible accounts from the Judge’s residence, the attackers were only deterred by the swift arrival of armed police officers. This marks the third reported incident involving an attack on the home of Judge Willie.

The bar said it is equally concerned about reports from other judges who have received similar threats and experienced attempted intrusions, including anonymous text messages designed to intimidate and obstruct the impartial discharge of their judicial duties.

The LNBA condemned the incidents in the strongest possible terms, labeling them as acts of gangsterism that have no place in a civilized and democratic society. “Such acts are a direct assault on the independence of the Judiciary and undermine public confidence in the rule of law,” the release observed.

“Judges must be allowed to carry out their functions free from intimidation, threats, or any form of influence, whether internal or external. The independence and safety of the Judiciary are essential to preserving the integrity of Liberia’s justice system,” the release added.

Accordingly, the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) called on the Ministry of Justice and all relevant state security institutions to immediately investigate this report and bring the culprit to justice. The bar also requested the Liberian National Police (LNP) to provide adequate security and permanent police presence at the residence of Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie and all judges who are similarly targeted, emphasizing that these steps are necessary to prevent any further attempts that may result in harm to judicial officers or their families.

“The Government of Liberia has a Constitutional and moral obligation to ensure the safety of all citizens, especially those who serve the nation in high-risk roles. Judge Willie, in his capacity as a presiding judge over high-profile criminal matters, must be afforded enhanced security protection without delay.

“The LNBA remains committed to safeguarding the independence of the Judiciary and the protection of all judicial officers across the country. We urge the public to stand in solidarity with the Judiciary and to reject all forms of lawlessness and threats aimed at derailing the justice system,” the LNBA release noted.

Meanwhile, the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Her Honor Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, on the joyous occasion of her 70th birthday, stating that the remarkable milestone is not only a celebration of years but a testament to a life of dedicated service, integrity, and excellence in the administration of justice.

“The bar acknowledges with deep admiration the invaluable contributions of Her Honor to the Judiciary and the nation at large. As you mark this significant chapter, the Bar joins you in celebration and prays for your continued good health, long life, peace, and God’s choicest blessings. Happy 70th Birthday, Chief Justice,” the release further observed.
