Monrovia Day is a significant celebration in Liberia, held annually to commemorate the restoration of local governance in 1979. The 2026 edition kicked off with a spectacular parade at 8:00 a.m. on February 16, featuring a march up Snipper Hill and through principal streets of Monrovia.

The parade was a vibrant display of civic pride, showcasing the city’s rich culture and heritage. Residents and visitors alike turned out to participate in the festivities, waving flags and banners, and cheering as the procession passed by.

The official in-door ceremony followed at 4:00 p.m. at Monrovia City Hall, with dignitaries, government officials, and community leaders in attendance. The ceremony began with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by performances by the Monrovia Mass Choir.

Mayor John-Charuk Siafa delivered the State-of-the-City Address, highlighting the city’s progress, challenges, and up-coming modernization projects. He spoke about initiatives such as the Broad Street Modernization and Monrovia Beach Project, aimed at transforming the city’s infrastructure and improving the quality of life for residents.

The celebration also included the presentation of Key to the City Awards, held on February 15, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the city’s progress. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding citizens who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to Monrovia’s development.

Monrovia Day is observed as a holiday within the city limits, giving residents a chance to participate in the festivities and reflect on the city’s journey since the restoration of local governance in 1979. The day aims to foster a sense of identity and civic pride among residents, marking the anniversary of the 1979 inauguration of the first Mayor and City Council after 53 years of administrative pause.

The event was held under the theme, “Moving Monrovia Forward”, emphasizing the city’s commitment to progress and development. The celebration was a testament to the city’s resilience and determination to rebuild and thrive.

Overall, Monrovia Day 2026 was a grand success, showcasing the city’s vibrant culture, rich heritage, and strong community spirit. The event was a reminder of the importance of civic engagement and community participation in shaping the city’s future.
