The Ministry of Agriculture has proposed a US$50 million budgetary allotment in 2025 in order to boost food production and empower farmers across the country.
Speaking during the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the Minister of Agriculture, Alexander Nuetah, said the ministry is proposing a budget of US$50 million for the 2025 fiscal year to implement the National Agricultural Plan across the country, revealing that they have formally presented their proposal to the 55th National Legislature, seeking support for the budgetary appropriation.
Minister Nuetah stated that, if the requested funding is approved it will enable the ministry to cultivate 50,000 hectares of agricultural produce as part of efforts to boost the sector, especially rice production.
According to him, the ministry is empowering a series of Iocal farmers who are involved with rich farming throughout the country.
He further revealed the increase of interest in cassava processing by investors, although he did not disclose the identities of the investors. He underscored that this development is expected to enhance income for local farmers engaged in cassava cultivating in Liberia.
Meanwhile, Minister Nuetah has disclosed that contracts have already been signed with 139 farmers under the Emergency Rice Production Agency, a subset of the Ministry of Agriculture, aimed at addressing food security challenges.
“This proposed budget boost is not just a financial request; it represents a strategic commitment to transform Liberia’s agricultural landscape. By prioritizing local production and reducing reliance on imports, the government aims to ensure food security and improve livelihoods for farmers across the nation,” he observed.
The Minister noted that one of the main objectives of the National Agricultural Plan is to empower local farmers, and that the ministry is already supporting a number of local rice farmers across various counties, providing them with the necessary tools, training and resources to enhance their productivity.
Dr. Nuetah pointed out that the MoA’s focus on local rice farming aligns with the government’s broader goal of achieving food security and economic self-reliance by investing in agriculture, and that he believes the country can reduce its reliance on food imports and create more job opportunities within rural communities.
The minister explained that the proposed budget will also cover research and development in new agricultural technologies, aimed at modernizing farming practices in Liberia. “This includes the introduction of innovative techniques and sustainable farming methods to increase crop yields and reduce environmental impacts,” he said.
Additionally, Dr. Nuetah urged the lawmakers to view the proposed budget as an investment in the nation’s future. He emphasized that agriculture remains a key pillar of Liberia’s economy, and that a robust agricultural sector is vital for sustainable economic growth.
