The Managing Director of the National Housing Authority (NHA), Florence K. Geegbae, has disclosed the construction of 600 housing units designed to be built and sold to public servants.
Speaking during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Thursday, January 22, 2025 in Monrovia, the MD said the special presidential project underway is acquiring and preparing land for the construction of 600 housing units in six pilot counties, and public-private partnerships have submitted designs, while a financial proposal is being processed for contract preparation.
According to her, the six hundred housing units will be in Grand Bassa, Bomi, Bong, Lofa, Nimba and Montserrado County. She emphasized the development of affordable residential housing units for low- and middle-income earners.
Geegbae said the housing condition of about 2,640 people will be improved, given Liberia’s average household size of 4.4 people.
She said 3,000 indirect jobs will be created at the rate of 5 jobs per housing unit. Land sellers, transport workers, building materials suppliers, food sellers, etc., will benefit, as there will be improved access to basic infrastructure and basic services.
Meanwhile, the Liberia housing sector faces a severe affordability crisis with high construction costs, limited finance, and poverty making decent housing unattainable for many citizens.
Urban areas like Monrovia are experiencing over crowdedness and huge slums situations, and the lack of funding and comprehensive policies remain a significant bottleneck to improving the housing situation.
