The People Uniting for Peace in Liberia (PUFPIL) is calling on all Liberians, political parties, civil society organizations and stakeholders to uphold the tenets of democracy ahead of the voter registration exercise for the October 10, 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

In a press release issued February 12, 2023, PUFPIL said the call comes in keeping with Chapter VIII, Article 77 (a) and (b) of the 1986 Constitution, which states that since the essence of democracy is free competition of ideas expressed by political parties and political groups as well as by individuals, parties may freely be established to advocate their political opinions of the people and every Liberian citizen, not less than 18 years of age, shall have the right to be registered as a voter or vote in public elections and referendum under the Constitution.

With signs of political tension building up in various corners of Liberia, PUFPIL noted that these are warning signs that have the proclivity of undermining the peace and stability of the country.

PUFPIL encouraged the young people of Liberia, who are eligible to vote, to peacefully turn up during the voter registration exercise, as the country’s peace lies in their hands.

“PUFPIL would also like to take this time to express thanks and appreciation to the Government of Liberia (GOL) and partners for maintaining peace in the country, and urge all Liberians to come together for the betterment of the country,” the civil society group said in the release.

PUFPIL is a non-governmental organization established to contribute meaningfully to the promotion of human rights, good governance, prevention of conflict, gender mainstreaming and respect for the right to participate in national decision-making, the right to self-determination, personal development and respect for the adherence to the tenets of the rule of law.
