To promote an effective Criminal Justice System (CJS), the Rural Human Rights Activists Program (RHRAP) continues to enhance the capacity of police and correction officers to improve their services at places of assignment. This training is focused on human rights “Perspective in Policing and Correction”, and is intended to promote fundamental human rights, democratic values, and rule of law in Liberia.

From March 2—3, 2022, RHRAP organized a two-day training session for 30 (15 police & 15 correction) officers of Margibi County, and from the 4th—5th of March another two-day training was organized for 30 police and correction officers of Bong County at the YMCA Building, Gbarnga City.

It is expected that the officers that participated in these training sessions will use the knowledge and skills acquired to enforce the law, in line with the Constitution of Liberia as well as international human rights standards that will add values to the Liberian democratic system. Until 2023, RHRAP and its partner, Serving Humanity, Education and Development (SHED), will continue their capacity building supports to the police and correction officers, community, traditional and religious at various levels in Margibi, Bong, and Nimba counties to promote fundamental human rights, rule of law and democratic values.

“In addition to the training, RHRAP is involved with follow-up monitoring visits to police withholding cells, prisons and see how the officers are applying the knowledge and skills gained from the various capacity building trainings we provide. The trainings complement national government’s efforts in upholding the rule of law, fundamental human rights of residents, which are fundamental pillars to genuine democratic system,” RHRAP stated in a press release.

This project, “Strengthening Democracy and Respect for Fundamental Human Rights of Prisoners in Liberia”, is being implemented by the Rural Human Rights Activists Program (RHRAP) in partnership with Serving Humanity, Education and Development (SHED), which is the project lead with funding from the European Union (EU). This is a three-year project focused on Bong, Margibi and Nimba counties, and is geared towards enhancing the capacity of various actors at various levels, which seeks to contribute to an effective criminal justice system (CJS), genuine democracy and the adherence to rule of law in Liberia.

The Rural Human Rights Activists Program (RHRAP) Inc. is a human rights and peace organization that was established in December 1997 by a group of activists who believed that the message of human rights should be spread into the rural areas in order to educate the rural inhabitants on issues of human rights, peace and social development.

It is a non-profit, non-governmental and non-political organization. For the past years of existence, RHRAP education and advocacy works have been focused on promoting an effective criminal justice system (CJS), using various methodologies. RHRAP is headed by Lorma Baysah, its Executive Director.
