The Executive Director of the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), Samuel Bocay Nagbe Jr., has disclosed that the solarization of health centers across Liberia will be prioritized.
According to Director Nagbe, RREA is working with the Ministry of Health to ensure that solarization can be accessible in health centers to enable midwifery to carry out their functions without lack of electricity at the various health centers in the country.
Director Nagbe made the disclosure Tuesday in an interview with journalists at the Head Office of RREA, Newport Street, Monrovia.
He explained that under the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project (LESSAP), phase one of the project targeted 90 health centers, to solarize their facilities, of which 98 percent have been completed.
He indicated that the health centers which have been solarized will ensure hundred percent electrification for 24 hours in these facilities.
He asserted that, in Margibi County, four health centers were solarized; Gbarpolu County, four health centers; Lofa County, twelve health centers; and Bong County, six health centers.
Director Nagbe maintained that phase two of the LESSAP will continue in 2026, and 125 health centers will be targeted for solarization across the nation.
He noted that the 90 facilities targeted in phase one and 125 targeted in phase two are less than 250, but RREA has planned to target 800 facilities to be solarized by the end of 2029.
He pointed out that, with the solarization of health centers, schools and other public facilities will ensure electricity 24 hours around the clock in these facilities.
Director Nagbe reiterated that solar energy is critical for power generation in the near future, and it should be prioritized at the highest level in the process of national development.
According to him, the works of the RREA are always tangible and intended to provide electricity for the Liberian people in every sector of development in the country.
He explained that RREA also helps to regulate the sector in working with the public-private partnership to ensure that solar materials imported meet standard to prevent wrong materials from entering the country.
Director Nagbe emphasized that RREA is also in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the World Bank through the Liberian government to undertake major projects across Liberia.
