Margibi County’s Senator, Nathaniel F. McGill, has described the invasion of the Capitol Building by the Liberia National Police (LNP) as a threat to democracy, and therefore wants the LNP Inspector General, Gregory Coleman, held accountable for the unlawful act.
Senator McGill disclosed that he is filing a formal complaint to the plenary of the Liberian Senate, calling for a full-scale investigation into this matter to ensure justice is served and that such violation do not occur again.
According to him, the Capitol Building is the ground of the people, and unless police intervention is officially requested by the appropriate authorities, any intrusion or attack on lawmakers is a blatant violation of the separation of power.
He emphasized that the unprecedented act undermines the very essence of democracy and erodes respect for elected officials who represent the voice of the people. “Such actions must not go unanswered,” he maintained.
“For the first time in Liberia’s history, lawmakers have been subjected to physical assault by the police. Yet, many are silent, pretending this grave injustice does not concern them simply because they are not directly affected,” the Margibi Senator observed.
