The Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, NyonbleeKarnga-Lawrence, has disclosed that the Liberian Senate will on today, Tuesday, April 9, 2024 make a decision in plenary on the calls for the establishment of a war and economic crimes court for Liberia.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Pro Temp Karnga-Lawrence observed that the Senate notes the concerns of the public with respect to the establishment of the war and economic crimes court; as such, the Senate will make a decision on the matter today, but with reliance on the advice from members of the Senate Committees on Judiciary and Defense, Security and Intelligence.
In her write-out, the Grand Bassa County Senator said, “The public is invited to follow the Senate session tomorrow Tuesday, April 9, 2024 as a major decision will be taken on calls for the establishment of the war and economic crimes court.
“The Senate notes the concerns of the public with respect to the establishment of the war and economic crimes court however, Members of the Senate have relied on advice from Members of the Committees on Judiciary and Defence, Security and Intelligence.
“The public can be assured that just as they are concern and interested in ending the culture of impunity in Liberia, Senators are also interested and concerned about ending what has been a long-standing issue of impunity but has been keen on taking the appropriate step.”
She disclosed that several senators have made their positions clear on the issue of the court’s establishment, including senators Darius Dillon, Saah Joseph, Amara Konneh, Zoe Emmanuel Pennue, Simeon Taylor, Nathaniel McGill and Albert Chie.
However, information received from the Senate is that senators Prince Y. Johnson and Thomas Y. Nimely are among the few, if not the only, senators who did not sign the resolution.
