The Student Unification Party (SUP), under the Chairmanship of Sylvester Wheeler, has called for mass and unrelenting protests across all campuses of the University of Liberia (UL) beginning Monday, September 15, 2025, in demand of the immediate resignation or dismissal of UL President, Dr. Layli Maparyan. SUP alleged that Dr. Maparyan’s leadership is marked by corruption and incompetence, and has failed to address critical issues plaguing the nation’s premier institution of higher learning.

In a release issued September 11, 2025, SUP said despite their urgent meeting with the Speaker, Dr. Layli Maparyan, and members of the House of Representatives aimed at addressing their demands, the UL administration continues to ignore the legitimate concerns of over 25,000 students while announcing the reopening of school. “This decision to proceed with academic activities without addressing the non-negotiable demands of students is a display of arrogance, pomposity and a complete disregard for students’ welfare and academic integrity,” SUP said in the release.

In ten counts, SUP called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of Dr. Maparyan, claiming that her leadership has failed the students and the state-run university. The party also called for the reversal of the vacation school decision, emphasizing that vacation school must not be designated as a full semester; as such, the upcoming semester must be recognized as the second semester.

The student-based movement demanded that the UL administration resolves add and drop issues, noting that administrative failures from the previous semester must be rectified and students’ grades immediately updated on the university portal.

SUP also demanded the UL administration to provide buses for students commuting to the Fendall campus; improve campus facilities; investigate illegal dismissals; release the report that informed its decision to dismiss and suspend employees; empower UL Police; review employment practices; and reconstitute the Board of Trustees to reflect statutory standards.

The party emphasized that it will not falter in its commitment to the students’ cause, and observed that dialogue without action is meaningless and useless. “We call on all students to assemble on the campuses as we demand the immediate and uncompromising resignation of Dr. Maparyan,” the SUP release noted.
