Sup. Nyensuah, Dr. Hillers Hold High-Level Meeting With Pres. Boakai On Sarpo National Park Conservation

Recently, the Superintendent of Sinoe County, Peter Wleh Nyensuah, and conservationist, Dr.  Annika Hillers, met with His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and discussed the Sarpo National Park’s recovery from illegal miners.

   The meeting was focused on addressing escalating threats to the park, including illegal mining and unauthorized encroachment.

   Superintendent Nyensuah emphasized the importance of Sarpo National Park as a critical ecological reserve, underscoring the urgent need for strengthening legal and enforcement measures to protect its biodiversity.

   President Boakai, in response, expressed concern and affirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s natural heritage.

   Meanwhile, both parties discussed coordinated steps to ensure Sarpo National Park is preserved for future generations, for tourist purpose, and for Liberia’s  progress.

   “This was a productive and timely conversation,” said Superintendent Nyensuah. “We look forward to concrete legal and policy actions that reflect our collective commitment to environmental stewardship.”

   In furtherance, the office of Superintendent Nyensuah expressed collaborative effort to working with national stakeholders and the international conservation community to protect Liberia’s ecosystem.

   Dr. Hillers is the Director of the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation, who is against illegal miners’ presence at the Sapo National Park.

   “Sapo National Park is in crisis. All the protected areas in Liberia are in crises,” Dr. Hillers said when Superintendent Peter Wleh Nyensuah, Sinoe County, and an array of government officials and journalists visited Jalay Town, the park’s headquarters and warned the illegals miners in the park to immediately leave.

   The Sapo National Park was founded by an act of legislation in 1983. It is surrounded by 74 towns and villages, and has boundaries with three counties—Sinoe County, Grand Gedeh County and River Gee County.
