In line with Vedanta Corporate Social Responsibility’s larger vision of youth empowerment and development through sports, Western Cluster Limited (WCL) officially kicked off the Tubmanburg community tournament on July 16.

The disclosure was made on Sunday, July 16, in Tubmanburg and the tournament was officially opened at the C.H. Dewey field in Tubmanburg by Western Cluster Head of Liberia, Chetan Savant. He expressed joy about the tournament and reiterated WCL’s commitment and full support towards successful completion of the initiative.

Speaking at the event, Tubmanburg City Mayor, Edwin Ken, commended Western Cluster Ltd. for supporting such a program. He thanked WCL and shared the fact that this is for the first time any company has come forward to support this community engagement and development initiative, as no company ever supported the initiative since the tournament started years ago and was sponsored by the members of the communities themselves. Western Cluster Limited provided sports equipment and merchandize, including jerseys, to the Tubmanburg Tournament Committee for onward distribution to the teams.

Addressing jubilant sports lovers in Tubmanburg, Chetan Savant, Western Cluster Country Head, said, “As a responsible corporate, Vedanta Western Cluster Limited is committed towards the development and well-being of the communities we serve. This tournament is a testament to our commitment towards transforming the lives of youth of Liberia, Bomi County in particular, by empowering them, fostering their skills and providing them with opportunities to shine.”

The community tournament is organized by the Tubmanburg City Cooperation in Bomi County, with over 25 communities participating in it. It is an annual traditional tournament that takes place ahead of the National County Meet.    Since WCL commenced work late last year, it has embarked on a number of projects. In recent time, it completed the rehabilitation of the road work from St. Paul Bridge to Klay Junction. Recently, WCL also did potholes fixing from Klay intersection to Tubmanburg that was caused by the on-going heavy rain. WCL has paid social development funds to the Government of Liberia (GOL) and constructed two bridges at Gui Town and Klay intersection. Recently, WCL paid US$14.5 million to the government, out of which US$10 million is towards social development funds and US$4.5 million for the rehabilitation of the road from the Freeport of Monrovia up to Tubmanburg, Bomi County.
