The Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, has announced 2,471,617 (two million four hundred seventy-one thousand six hundred seventeen) as the final figure of registered voters that will participate in the October 10, 2023 general and presidential elections after the conclusion of the exhibition, deduplication and adjudication process of the 2023 biometric voter registration provisional roll. She said, of that number, 1,237,257 are females and 1,234,360 are males.
In a press conference on Monday, July 17, 2023, the NEC boss said, “The NEC from June 12—17, 2023 conducted the exhibition of the provisional registration roll from the March 20, 2023 to May 11, 2023 voter registration exercise. Prior to the exhibition, the NEC announced a preliminary figure of 2,498,904, of which 27,192 duplicate records were identified while 529 suspected underage registrants were flagged, and the total active registrants was 2,471,183. Both active registrants and suspected underage registrants were exhibited during the period stated above.
“Following the conclusion of the exhibition exercise, in preparation for this announcement, the commission on July 13, 2023 demonstrated to the National Steering Committee on Elections (NSCE) the results of the exhibition exercise and provided were conducted. The NSCE is chaired by the Minister of Justice and Co-Chaired by the ECOWAS Commission Resident Representative in Liberia and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia.”
According to Browne Lansanah, “A similar exercise for political parties was held under the Inter-Party Consultative Committee (IPCC) on July 14, 2023 at which time the commission demonstrated the outcome of the exhibition with reference to the deduplication and adjudication of the provisional registration roll.”
The NEC boss used the occasion to announce that the nomination of candidates for the October 10, 2023 elections commenced on June 14, 2023 and concluded on July 14, 2023 as planned, with a total of 1,030 (one thousand and thirty) aspirants submitting nomination documents to the commission during the process. “Of this number, 159 (one hundred and fifty-nine) aspirants, constituting 15%, are females, while 871 (eight hundred seventy-one) or 85% are males. Independent aspirants account for 199, constituting 19% while aspirants for political parties/coalitions/alliances are 831 or 81%,” the NEC boss disclosed.
Meanwhile, Browne Lansanah has announced that the National Elections Commission (NEC) will on today, Tuesday, July 18, 2023 publish the provisional list of candidates for the 2023 elections, and the final list to be published on August 5, 2023.
