The Political Leader and Standard Bearer of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Alexander B. Cummings, has called for respect for the rule of law and increased commitment to deepening the culture and values of democracy in neighboring Sierra Leone.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 14, 2022 in Monrovia, the ANC Political Leader spoke of the need for Liberians to pay close attention and be more concerned about the situation in neighboring Sierra Leone because of the close ties between the two nations and the shared common history and circumstances by the two peoples.

Cummings expressed profound sympathy for Sierra Leoneans who lost their lives, and called for calm and restoration of law and order.

“Our sub-region must continue to deepen our shared commitment to democracy, peace and security of all our peoples, and ensure the rule of law in our societies,” the ANC Political Leader said.

Violent bloody anti-government demonstrations in Sierra Leone last week left six police officers and several civilians dead.

Sierra Leone authorities immediately declared curfew in the affected areas, but later lifted it after calm had returned to the areas.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the violence and called on Sierra Leoneans to adhere to law and order, and requested that perpetrators of the violence be identified and made to face the full force of the law.
