The residents of Iron Factory community’s block B and block C have approached the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) for not giving them electricity; Cynthia Quinisier reports.
In a concern issued to the authorities of LEC, the residents said, “The peace and loving people of Iron Factory community, comprising of over 2,500 residents and more than 350 houses, express and channel our grievances through LEC’s office, which we strongly believe is the most appropriate way for such dissatisfaction to be expressed for redress.”
The group spokesperson, Ayoubah Swaray, said it is frustrating to know that the communities are the only two communities situated right on the main road along the Japan Freeway that were deliberately left without electricity by LEC and the World Bank.
“We have made every effort to address this situation yet the authorities of LEC keep sidelining and ignoring our concern,” Swaray stated.
According to Swaray, the efforts applied includes writing several communications to LEC’s management, meeting with administrators and authorities of LEC and the World Bank team, meeting with district #13’s lawmaker on several occasions, as well as Montserrado County Senator, Saah Joseph, on the same issue.
He said as a means of avoiding street protest, violence and other activities which might constitute citizens taking the law in their own hands as a means of seeking redress to their plight, they have decided to embark on this project.
Several citizens of the Iron Factory community, district #13, Montserrado County, early Monday morning staged a peaceful protest at the front of the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s head office in Waterside.
The angry Iron Factory residents disclosed that the lack of electricity in their area is causing serious embarrassment for them. They said the situation has increased the criminal rate in the community and is preventing their children from staying home.
LEC spokesperson, Adolphus Scott, said the Liberia Electricity Corporation will work to ensure that electricity is provided the communities.
