The Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 destroyed a huge quantity of cocaine worth US$37 million at the Barclay Training Center (BTC), but no arrest was made.
It can be recalled in October 2022 that authorities of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and National Security Agency (NSA) stormed the ground of the SONIT Liberia Inc. Compound, Topoe Village along the Japan Freeway, after they received a tipoff from the United States government and made a seizure of a huge quantity of raw cocaine concealed among frozen goods owned by SONIT Inc.
Speaking during the burning of the drugs, the Director General of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Marcus Zehyoue, said this is the second largest confiscation of drugs in the country, and shows that Liberia is ready to ensure that it is a drug-free country.
The LDEA boss disclosed that TRH is the whistleblower behind the US$37 million worth of cocaine that was seized but they have not been able to trace the person. TRH is the largest importer of frozen food in the country.
He extended thanks to the joint security for their collaborating effort in the fight against drugs, saying that the LDEA is up for zero tolerance on drugs. “We want to make Liberia a drug-free nation,” Director Zehyoue said.
At the same time, the Minister of Justice, Frank Musa Dean, assured the public that Liberia remains committed to the fight against drug trafficking, and that Liberia will not be a safe haven for drug traffickers, whether as final destination or as transit point.
He further called on every citizen to assist the government in the fight against drug trafficking by alerting the LDEA and the joint security with any information relating to drug traffickers.
“The public can be assured that the government is committed to the fight against drug trafficking, and we urge them to also be of assistance whenever they can,” Justice Minister Dean stated.
According to him, they informed the LDEA and members of the joint security about activities of drug traffickers. “You know how harmful these drugs are to our youth and population. We want to assure you that you will be protected and the information will be treated as very classified,” he noted.
