As all seems set for Liberians to elect a new group of leaders or maintain President George Weah and the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) on October 10, 2023, the President has re-assured Liberians of a new hope they can count on.
Since Tuesday, August 8, 2023 President Weah has visited 10 districts, thanking the electorates for electing him for the first term and asking them again to re-elect him for a second term. On Tuesday, President Weah visited districts #7 and #8; on Wednesday, he led the campaign in districts #14 and #16; on Thursday was districts #9 and 10; on Friday the campaign entered districts #11 and #12; and Saturday was in districts #5 and #6.
The turnout was massive in every district, with the masses reassuring the President of their commitment to supporting him for a second term.
Even though Weah is the incumbent, he has been vigorously campaigning and taking his platform to every nook and corner of Montserrado County, putting himself ahead of the opposition in terms of engaging the electorate.
A political analyst, who was shocked by Weah’s vigor in getting re-elected, described the opposition as “not prepared” to unseat the President in October. According to him, to win an election requires being on top of the information, financial liquidity, engaging the electorate with a marketable platform and canvassing. He said from all indications the President and the CDC is a few steps ahead of all the parties in the race for the presidency.
The political analyst argued that it is only the CDC that has named a full campaign team—including county levels—with a visible engagement with the electorate. According to the political expert, while the CDC and the President are out canvassing for support, opposition political parties and candidates are still raining insults on each other on social media platforms, thus wondering whether this is how the opposition politicians intend to succeed in unseating President Weah at the polls in October.
It can be recalled that the President has been vocal and emphatic with his campaign message to the electorate—reject the opposition and re-elect the CDC based on achievements and tangibles, listing several completed, on-going and proposed projects for the health, education, infrastructure, agriculture and fiscal and monetary policies.
The President has been emphasizing his achievable development platform for the country, which has secured stable electricity, pipe-borne water, several road pavements, constructed hospitals and schools, payment of WASSCE and WAEC fees, free tuition policy, pro-poor housing construction, women empowerment, markets and town halls construction, recreation centers for the youth, etc.
According to the President, there are some politicians who are seeking for a return to power, but did nothing when they previously had the opportunity. He stated that those politicians are using rhetoric and lies to steal their way to national leadership. He also lashed at other politicians who became very successful in their careers and achieved a lot at the international level but forgot their roots, but now want to use government as their retirement package.
He vowed to continue the development spree if given the opportunity for a second term, promising an improved economic environment and hyper-development initiatives.
