CPP Takes NEC To ECOWAS Court
The Solicitor General of Liberia, Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cephus, has disclosed that the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) has taken the Liberian government to the ECOWAS Court through the National Elections Commission (NEC) for its refusal to clean up the 2017 voter roll as mandated by the Supreme Court of Liberia.
The Solicitor General made the disclosure on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, when he appeared on a local station in Monrovia. He said while CPP candidates are campaigning across the country, they have gone to ECOWAS Court to halt the pending December 8 election. According to Cllr. Cephus, the same opposition seeking to halt the pending election in the name of cleaning up the voter roll have won several elections on the same voter roll, which they claimed is not clean.
Moreover, the SG disclosed that issues of such (voter roll) borders on the Constitution and, therefore, cannot be discussed by the regional court. He pointed out that ECOWAS cannot interfere into Liberia’s Constitutional matter, which the Supreme Court of Liberia has handed a verdict.
He expressed disappointment in members of the CPP for taking the Liberian government to ECOWAS Court when the country is two weeks away from the pending senatorial election. Accordingly, the SG averred that members of CPP who have taken the government to the regional court are calling for the court to review or overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling. He noted that Supreme Court has ruled in the case, allowing the midterm senatorial election to go ahead.
CPP, according to information, took the government to court based on human rights violation. CPP has been calling for the cleaning of the voter roll before the conduct of the midterm election.
Due to the repeated calls to have the voter roll cleaned, the government recently invited experts from ECOWAS and other international partners to help NEC to have the voter roll cleaned. Those experts have concluded the cleaning of the voter roll.
