ArcelorMittal, since it arrived in Liberia, has positioned itself as a major driver of the country’s development, going beyond mining to invest in sectors critical to national progress. From healthcare and education to infrastructure and environmental conservation, the company has established itself as a key partner in Liberia’s future.

As Liberia’s largest private-sector employer, ArcelorMittal provides thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, supporting local businesses and contractors. Its role as the country’s highest taxpayer for several consecutive years has also bolstered Liberia’s national budget, enabling the government to fund crucial programs in health, education, and infrastructure.

The company has placed community development at the center of its operations. Through initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa counties, ArcelorMittal has built parks, upgraded local infrastructure, and engaged with communities to ensure sustainable growth. These projects have empowered local leaders and improved livelihoods, reinforcing the company’s commitment to Liberia’s progress.

ArcelorMittal has also made significant strides in improving healthcare across the country. The renovation of the General In-Patient Pediatric and General Surgery Wards at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia and the construction of the Ganta Eye Clinic in Nimba County are among its notable achievements. In addition, the company has donated medical supplies and equipment to local clinics and hospitals and is currently supporting the construction of new hospitals in Grand Bassa and Nimba Counties.

In the education sector, ArcelorMittal has invested heavily in the construction and renovation of schools, providing scholarships, and supporting vocational training. Its ArcelorMittal Training Academy in Yekepa equips young Liberians with skills needed for the mining industry, while financial support for the Geology Department at Nimba University ensures the continued education of future geologists.

Infrastructure improvements have been a key focus of ArcelorMittal’s work in Liberia. The company has upgraded several kilometers of city and rural roads, facilitating better transport and access for communities in Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa Counties. A $40 million commitment to the pavement of the Ganta-Yekepa Road is one of the company’s most significant contributions to Liberia’s road network, helping to improve mobility and boost trade in the region.

Environmental conservation is another area where ArcelorMittal has made its mark. The company has undertaken reforestation projects around Mount Tokadeh and worked to protect the East Nimba Nature Reserve, which is home to rare species such as the Nimba Toad. ArcelorMittal’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint is also reflected in its waste management initiatives in mining communities, aimed at preventing pollution and preserving local ecosystems.

ArcelorMittal is also an active supporter of Liberia’s National County Sports Meet, the country’s premier sporting event. The company has helped provide equipment and improve sports facilities, particularly in Yekepa, Bong, and Buchanan, promoting youth development and healthy lifestyles.

A key part of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s investment in the mining sector is the construction of a modern iron ore processing plant in Zolowee Town, Nimba County. This facility adds value to Liberia’s iron ore before export, enhancing the country’s position in global markets. The company’s ongoing Phase Two Expansion, which includes major upgrades to the Yekepa-Buchanan railway and Buchanan Port, promises to create thousands of jobs and strengthen Liberia’s economy.

From Yekepa to Buchanan, ArcelorMittal Liberia continues to be a major partner in Liberia’s development, driving progress in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental conservation. Through its investments, the company is helping to build a sustainable future for all Liberians.
