Residents in Grand Bassa County are set to benefit from a series of major community development projects funded and implemented by ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML). Some of the projects have been completed, while others are still undergoing construction at 98 percent completion.

These projects, which focus on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, are part of the company’s Community Development Fund, aimed at improving the lives of people in communities impacted by its operations.

Among the completed projects is the St. John Teachers Quarters in Electoral District #4, providing much-needed accommodation for educators. The availability of proper housing for teachers ensures their stability and commitment to the education sector, addressing long-standing challenges faced by rural schools in retaining qualified personnel.

Similarly, the completion of the Siahn Public School in Electoral District #3 has provided access to quality education for hundreds of children, many of whom previously had to travel long distances to attend school. The fencing of Gorblee High School in Electoral District #2 further enhances security for students and staff, creating a more conducive learning environment.

Healthcare services in Grand Bassa have also seen significant improvement through AML’s investment. The Boeglay Maternal Waiting Homes, which are 96 percent complete, will serve as a critical facility for expectant mothers, ensuring they receive medical attention before and after childbirth. This project addresses the pressing need for improved maternal health services in rural communities, where many pregnant women previously faced challenges accessing timely medical care.

The local economy is also being strengthened with the completion of several market facilities, including the Duwein Market in Electoral District #1, the FDA Market in Electoral District #3, and the Big Joe Town Market in Electoral District #4. These markets provide better infrastructure for traders, improving business conditions and encouraging economic growth in the region. Traders who previously operated under difficult conditions now have safe and organized spaces to conduct their businesses, leading to increased economic activity and income for many families.

Infrastructure development is another key area of AML’s intervention. The rehabilitation of the 4.6-kilometer Barconnie Road in Electoral District #2 has greatly improved connectivity in the region. Previously, poor road conditions made transportation of goods and services difficult, especially during the rainy season. With the newly rehabilitated road, residents can now move freely, and businesses have better access to markets and suppliers.

To further enhance community governance and civic engagement, AML has also invested in the construction of town halls. The Moore Town Hall in Electoral District #2 and the Fairground Community Town Hall in Buchanan City, which is 98 percent complete, will serve as vital spaces for community meetings, decision-making, and public discussions. These facilities provide a formal environment where local leaders and citizens can engage in governance issues, fostering transparency and community participation in development activities.

Residents of Grand Bassa County have welcomed these projects, noting that they have significantly improved their living conditions. Many community members express gratitude to AML for its commitment to addressing critical social and economic challenges through its Community Development Fund. They believe the projects will have a lasting impact, creating opportunities for education, business, and improved healthcare, ultimately contributing to the long-term development of the county.

With these ongoing and completed initiatives, ArcelorMittal Liberia continues to demonstrate its dedication to corporate social responsibility. By ensuring that communities affected by its operations benefit from sustainable development, the company is playing a crucial role in uplifting thousands of people in Grand Bassa County. As these projects near completion, residents remain hopeful for continued investment in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, further strengthening the partnership between AML and the people of Liberia.
