President Joseph N. Boakai has broken ground for the construction of two overpass bridges along the Tubman Boulevard, Congo Town, describing the ceremony a significant milestone in his government’s effort in prioritizing infrastructure investment to drive economic growth by building roads and bridges that connect communities and provide access to agricultural and mining regions.
The project is sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, and comprises of one overpass bridge near the Ministerial Complex and another further east at SKD Boulevard. The construction will be carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex, and graced by officials of the Liberian government and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China near Monrovia.
Speaking at the occasion, President Boakai described the project as a practical solution to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and prevent the economic losses that people face every day due to traffic delays in delivering and acquiring goods and services, as well as the movement of ambulances and fire trucks to where they are most needed.
“This is the power of road infrastructure: it shortens distances, lowers costs, and enhances economic growth. Once these bridges are completed, there will be a visible sign of our government keeping its promises to improve the efficiency of our road network,” he observed.
The President expressed his government’s deep gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for its on-going generosity in supporting Liberia’s economic transformation, noting that the partnership between the two countries is at its best, with a significant focus on implementing tangible projects that align with Liberia’s national development agenda.
Also speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador accredited to Monrovia, H.E. Yin Chengwu, described the project as a “vivid illustration” of the deepening strategic partnership between China and Liberia. He noted that the initiative is a direct outcome of commitments made during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where President Xi Jinping and President Boakai elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
“The successful launch of this project signifies not only the traditional friendship between China and Liberia, but also the continuously deepening cooperation between our two countries,” Ambassador Yin said.
He emphasized that Liberia’s road challenges have long hindered economic and social development, and commended President Boakai’s foresight in prioritizing road construction under the ARREST Agenda. According to him, the two flyovers—located at the Ministerial Complex and SKD Boulevard intersections—will ease congestion, improve logistics, boost growth, and deliver “tangible benefits” to Liberians.
“These two flyovers will not only serve as bridges for smooth transportation, but also as bridges of friendship and win-win cooperation between our two peoples,” he said.
