In light of recent demolition exercises carried out by the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), the Alternative National Congress (ANC) has called on the Government of Liberia (GOL) to demonstrate compassionate, accountable, and people-centered leadership in addressing the needs of its citizens.
In a release issued recently and signed by its Chairman, Lafayette E.O. Gould, the ANC said, “While we fully recognize the necessity of improving the welfare, accommodation, and working conditions of our gallant men and women in uniform, such efforts must not come at the cost of the dignity, safety, and livelihoods of ordinary Liberians.”
The opposition political party observed that the recent demolition exercise in the 72nd Community has once again exposed a troubling pattern of governance marked by poor planning, weak coordination, and a disturbing lack of empathy.
According to the ANC, hundreds of Liberian citizens, including women, children, and the elderly—were left homeless, out of business, traumatized, and uncertain about their future; regrettably, the Unity Party–led government has so far shown little compassion, urgency, or leadership in responding to the humanitarian consequences of its actions.
“Governance must never be reduced to the exercise of power without responsibility. Development that displaces citizens without adequate consultation, compensation, or resettlement is not progress, rather, it is a failure of leadership,” the ANC release noted.
“The ANC strongly condemns any action that renders Liberians homeless in the name of development or national security.
“We therefore call on the government to immediately prioritize the relocation, compensation, and welfare of all affected citizens and to ensure that no future demolition is carried out without comprehensive resettlement plans, community engagement, and social safeguards. A responsible government plans before it acts and protects its people, especially the most vulnerable, from avoidable suffering.
“The ANC firmly believes that true leadership is measured not by force or authority, but by compassion, foresight, and respect for human dignity.
“We urge the government to embrace transparent, inclusive, and consultative processes by engaging community leaders, civil society, and relevant stakeholders before implementing actions that directly impact citizens’ lives.
“At this critical moment, Liberia needs leadership that rescues its people rather than reduces them to beggars, leadership that builds homes instead of destroying lives.
“The Unity Party–led government must rise to its responsibility and govern with empathy, justice, and accountability because no Liberian should be made homeless by their own government.”
