The National Civil Society Union of Liberia (NACSUL) has strongly condemned recent public statements directed against the Minister of Justice, Cllr. Oswald Tweh, describing the remarks as unfounded, counterproductive, and a threat to on-going efforts aimed at strengthening the rule of law in the country.
In a statement issued in Monrovia, NACSUL expressed deep concern over what it termed as “unwarranted and misleading assertions” intended to undermine the integrity and credibility of the Ministry of Justice.
The group emphasized that such statements not only erode public trust in national institutions but also risk derailing the significant progress being made within the justice sector.
The Civil Society Union of Liberia noted that under the leadership of Minister Tweh, the ministry has made considerable strides in promoting accountability, enhancing transparency, and advancing critical legal reforms.
These efforts, the civil society group said, are vital to consolidating Liberia’s democratic gains and ensuring equal access to justice for all citizens.
“While we recognize and uphold the importance of free speech and constructive criticism in a democratic society, it is equally important that public discourse remains responsible, fact-based, and geared toward national development,” the statement read. “Baseless attacks and sensational claims do not contribute to meaningful dialogue, but rather create unnecessary tension and confusion among the public.”
The group further called on all stakeholders, including public officials, members of the legal community, and civil society actors, to exercise restraint and professionalism when addressing sensitive national issues.
It underscored the need for unity and collaboration in addressing Liberia’s justice and governance challenges.
According to NACSUL, the Ministry of Justice continues to play a pivotal role in maintaining law and order, combating corruption, and supporting ongoing national initiatives, including discussions around the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court.
The group reaffirmed its support for these efforts and encouraged all parties to engage constructively in advancing justice and accountability.
The Civil Society Union of Liberia (NACSUL) also urged the public to remain calm and not be swayed by statements that lack credible evidence.
It called for increased public awareness and civic responsibility in evaluating information, especially on matters of national importance.
Reaffirming its commitment to good governance, the rule of law, and democratic accountability.
The National Civil Society Union of Liberia pledged to continue working with government institutions and international partners to promote peace, justice, and sustainable development across the country.
