In the ruthless calculus of politics, the end often justifies the means. That was the logic behind the calculated lie and cunning conspiracy that branded Alexander Cummings a “Gayman”, a charge weaponized precisely because its architects understood the depth of social resentment in Liberia toward the gay lifestyle. The propaganda, crafted by a shrewd mind, sought to destroy his reputation and render useless a man who, from the outset, played by corporate rules in a political arena that rewards combat, not compliance. For too long Cummings believed others would speak for him, that competence and decency would prevail without a fight.

One paragraph must address the climate in which the false accusation landed. In Liberia, homosexuality is illegal under Penal Code sections 14.74 and 14.79, punishable by up to one year in prison, and same-sex marriage is barred by law. Public opinion remains overwhelmingly hostile: churches have linked homosexuality to national calamities like Ebola, politicians invoke “traditional values” to justify rejection, and LGBTQ Liberians face harassment, death threats, and violence. Into that environment, opponents hurled the false claim that Cummings was gay, knowing the stigma would isolate him from voters, donors, and allies. The smear was designed to make his business acumen and reform agenda irrelevant, to reduce a global executive to a social outcast. Cummings has now stated unequivocally that “he is not gay and has never been,” dismissing the allegations as baseless distractions with no bearing on leadership or governance.

For some strange reason, the introvert Alexander Cummings has finally realized that politics and a corporation run parallel and do not meet. Shedding his corporate robe and donning political boxing gloves, he has begun to confront head-on the injustices and economic inequality he once approached through boardroom memos and philanthropic grants. He expected others to defend his character; he now understands the work is his. The shy strategist is learning to become the fearless challenger Liberia’s broken systems demand.

That shift matters because the actor they wanted out of the race possesses a rare portfolio. Born in Monrovia’s Point Four neighborhood to an educator-prelate father and a midwife-entrepreneur mother who sent him door-to-door to collect payments, Cummings attended Cuttington University for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Northern Illinois University, where he earned a BSc in Finance with a minor in Economics. He later received an MBA in Finance from Clark-Atlanta University. He worked 15 years at The Pillsbury Company, leaving as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Pillsbury International, before joining Coca-Cola in 1997 as Managing Director for Nigeria. By 2001 he was President and Chief Operating Officer of Coca-Cola’s Africa Group, overseeing operations in 56 countries and territories. He shifted the Africa business from expatriate-dominated leadership to over 70% African, drove record sales and profit growth, and led critical investments in marketing and infrastructure across the continent.

In 2008 he was named Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of The Coca-Cola Company, consolidating global functions including Strategy, Legal, Human Resources, IT, Sustainability, and all Technical functions: R&D, Innovation, Supply Chain, Quality, Procurement, and Manufacturing. He managed an operating budget of roughly $1 billion and thousands of employees across 200 countries, playing a key role in embedding productivity and achieving $3 billion in annual cost savings. Chairman Muhtar Kent praised his “tireless service to growing and advancing our business in key markets” and his “passion for our people and vision for building sustainable communities”. He retired in 2016 after 19 years, nearly 20, with the company.

Beyond profit, Cummings oversaw the creation of The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation in 2001, responding to HIV/AIDS with healthcare programs for workers and community prevention efforts. The Foundation became the largest regional foundation in Coca-Cola’s global network, granting more than $100 million toward clean water, health education, and entrepreneurship across Africa. He has served on the boards of Chevron, S.C. Johnson & Son as Audit Committee Chair, Coca-Cola HBC, CARE, and Clark Atlanta University, where he was Board Chairman. He founded Cummings Investments Holdings and the Cummings Africa Foundation, continuing work in education, healthcare, and business development.

Today, politics has started with the candidate rivals feared most: a man with deep knowledge of the business community and commerce, and the managerial discipline to translate resources into results. His vision centers on accountability, practical solutions, and economic empowerment for all Liberians, regardless of tribe, religion, education, or socioeconomic status. He argues that Liberia’s highest seat is a tool for change, not power, and that his corporate experience—running a budget larger than Liberia’s 1.2 billion budget 2026—proves he can manage the nation’s finances with efficiency and integrity. Truth, once crushed to the ground by smear and silence, is rising as Alexander Cummings finally fights on political terms.
