United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has commended Liberians for their dedication to exercising their right to vote broadly and peacefully during the just-ended November 14, 2023 presidential run-off election.

The statement comes barely a day after the conduct of the country’s presidential run-off election, Constitutionally presided over by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

The comment on the run-off election also comes ahead of the release of provisional results by the National Elections Commission, in Monrovia between incumbent President George Weah, Standard Bearer of the Coalition for Democratic Change and former Vice President Joseph Boakai of the opposition Unity Party, as citizens patiently await the election house.

A press statement from the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy of the US Mission to the United Nation Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Ambassador Greenfield said Liberians reaffirmed their commitment to democracy in the run-off election.

“We commend their dedication to exercising their right to vote broadly and peacefully,” she noted.

The foreign diplomat underscored that the United States will continue to promote accountability and will call out anyone who undermines the electoral process through fraud, violence or intimidation.

“At each step of this election, Liberians from all walks of life have expressed their desire for Liberia–one of the oldest continuous republics in the world–to become a beacon of peaceful citizen-centered democratic governance in the region,” Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield averred.

At the same time, Ambassador Greenfield emphasized that the United States remains committed to helping the people of Liberia achieve this goal.
