ArcelorMittal begins Sports Tournament in 12 Affected Communities On Tuesday
Beginning Tuesday October 25, 2022, 12 football and kickball teams from towns and villages in the operational areas of ArcelorMittal Liberia (in Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa Counties) will challenge each other in a series of spectacular matches in the maiden edition of the ArcelorMittal Liberia Cup (popularly referred to as The AML Cup).
The towns and villages are grouped into community teams in each County. The community teams are:
- Grand Bassa County: Moore Town, Frank Diggs, Water and Sewer, and Barsigiah Town
- Bong County: Gbata, Botota, Rock Crusher and Zowenta
- NimbaCounty:Lugbeyee, Bonlah, Gbapa, New Yekepa, Zolowee, Sehykimpa, Sehyi-Geh, Makinto, Bunadin, Duo and other rail towns and villages.
The theme of the AML Cup maiden edition is ‘Promoting Social Cohesion Through Sports.”
The tournament is organized in collaboration with the local offices of the Liberia Football Association in Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa Counties. It will kick off on 25 October and end Ooctober 29, 2022.
All participating teams have been supplied necessary materials including sets of jerseys, footballs, and other sports gadgets by ArcelorMittal Liberia for a successful and entertaining tournament.
Head of Government and Community Relations, Marcus Wleh said he was excited and looking forward to the kickoff of the maiden edition of the AML Cup, which he described as a worthy investment that will further unite residents of AML mining communities, promote peace and social cohesion and cement AML’s relations with its community stakeholders in the three counties.
“This has been long coming, but we at ArcelorMittal Liberia have also believed that sport is a powerful tool to help unite our people and promote peace and development.”
Wleh said the launch of the AML Cup is another way of demonstrating ArcelorMittal Liberia’s commitment to developing the talents of young Liberians and promoting sports in the country.
He said ArcelorMittal Liberia has a long history of partnership and support to sports promotion in Liberia, referencing the company’s regular support to national events like the annual County Sports Meet, the Liberia Marathon, and others.
Ahead of Tuesday’s kickoffs of the AML Cup, Wleh encouraged all participating teams to display the highest level of sportsmanship, unity and peace, bearing in mind that at the end of the day, everyone will be a winner.
