Chief Of Public Safety Frowns On Reckless Bike Riders
The Chief of Public Safety, Liberia National Police (LNP), John Saah, has frowned on the constant breech of traffic rules by reckless bike and tricycle riders on the streets of Monrovia.
Commissioner Saar said the irresponsible behavior of these riders is the main cause of some of the worst motor accidents that often occur in the traffic in Monrovia.
The Chief of Public Safety was however quick to note that these reckless elements will not be allowed to undermine public safety as the police is on the standby to arrest and prosecute them.
Commissioner Saar said the traffic division of the Liberia National Police (LNP) will not spare any bike or tricycle rider who refuses to abide by traffic rules and signs.
The Chief of Public Safety made the statement at the Center for the Exchange of Intellectual Opinion on Carey Street last Friday when he was invited to abreast the public on the operation of the traffic division.
According to him, whenever the LNP attempts to restrict bike riders to remain in their respective communities the decision is often politicized, thereby making it difficult for the force to regulate their activities in the traffic.
Commissioner Saar used the platform to express disappointment over the attitude of the Motorbike Task Force, organized to augment the strength of regular police in the enforcement of the traffic rules
He lamented that, though the unit was established in good faith, some task force members are using their position to unlawfully arrest motorbikes from their owners and sell them for personal gain, without reporting the matter to the police headquarters.
The Chief of Public Safety warned that any Motorbike Task Force member involved in such a criminal behavior will face the full weight of the law.
At the same time, Commissioner Saar has praised the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Col. Patrick Sudue, for maintaining discipline in the force.
He disclosed that the Inspector General does not back any police officer engaged in using his position to break the law or infringe on the rights of others.
Commissioner Saar noted that several officers have been disrobed or sent to prison for non-compliance with the laws governing the force since Col. Patrick Sudue took over as head of the police.
He urged the public not to relent in filing a complaint to the headquarters for any act of lawlessness on the part of officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
