A pressure group, “Cry for Justice”, has announced a peaceful but massive and nationwide protest to hold the Boakai administration’s feet to the fire to make good its policy promises in solving the bread-and-butter issues of the economy as well as other pressing national issues, including the respect for the rule of law, extrajudicial killings, police brutality, early bribery by the Executive, etc.; Cynthia Quinisier reports.

“Cry for Justice”, headed by Janjay Baikpeh, was officially announced to the public in a press conference held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Saye Town, Sinkor.

Speaking at the press conference, the Chairman of the pressure group, Baikpeh, said, “Today we are grateful to announce to the Liberian people and the world at large the formation of Liberia’s first postwar pressure group, ‘Cry for Justice’, with the motto, “Believe and Redeem”. As Chairman of this noble institution, we shall lead with respect and dignity, and uphold the integrity of the institution while ensuring that the public trust remains uncompromising. We shall seek to hold national government and other stakeholders accountable to the Liberian people.

“Having said this, distinguished members of the fourth estate, we are pleased to announce a national call to action for a Constitutionally guaranteed democratic assembly and protest. We earlier announced the infamous April 6 as the date for our assembly, but as a result of much broader consultations, we have resolved to carry out our peaceful action following the first 100 days of the Boakai-led administration. Therefore, the new date for our nationwide action is now Tuesday, May 7, 2024.”

According to him, “As stated before, this is a Constitutionally guaranteed exercise. Our singular objective is to call the Boakai administration to immediate order for showing little respect for the rule of law, extrajudicial killings, police brutality, early bribery by the Executive, witch-hunt at line ministries and agencies of government, lack of accountability on spending public money and the creation of more unemployment at this early stage of their administration.

“The nation-wide assembly and protest action will be held at designated locations across the country that will send a resounding message against misrule, in conformity with our theme, ‘Believe and Redeem’.”
