The much-anticipated book, “Dark Freedom”, written by Liberian author and Journalist, F. Shelton Gonkerwon, has arrived in the country in a large quantity ahead of a grand national launch to be held soon in Monrovia.

‎   The Ministry of Education (MoE), through its Center of Excellence for Curriculum Development and Textbooks Research, has approved “Dark Freedom” as a supplementary reader for all senior high schools across Liberia, marking a major milestone in the promotion of Liberian-authored educational materials.

‎Described as both a contemporary historical record and a literary work, “Dark Freedom” explores the harsh realities of Liberia’s civil conflict and the lessons it holds for future generations. The Ministry of Education praised the book as a valuable resource for students, educators, researchers, and policymakers.

‎   “‘Dark Freedom’ is a must-read content, given its historical analysis of the true nature and devastation of the war, which eroded the very fabric of Liberia’s economy, culture, and history. We continue to wrestle with poverty, disunity, and corruption—vices which are the ripple effects of that war.”

‎  The letter further emphasizes the book’s role in national renewal: “The re-emergence of Liberia requires the prolific reading of this text to develop a spirit of true nationalism, peace, and unity. Changing minds and attitudes is essential for the rebirth of a new nation and a renewed people.”

‎   ‎In accordance with the center’s protocols, “Dark Freedom” underwent a comprehensive technical and contextual review to ensure alignment with the national curriculum.

‎  “A thorough analysis of the book’s contents was conducted, confirming that all literary and historical elements related to the civil war and its aftermath are accurate and meet academic standards,” the letter affirmed.

‎   ‎Upon receiving the Ministry’s approval, Gonkerwon—who is also the author of three other published works—expressed joy and gratitude, calling the endorsement a “historic milestone” for Liberian writers.

‎  Nicknamed “The Living Socrates” for his proverbial and poetic ingenuity, Gonkerwon appealed to Liberians at home and abroad, as well as friends of Liberia, to support the nation’s growing literary movement.

‎   “This achievement is not mine alone—it is for all Liberian writers who dream of seeing their work on the world stage,” he said. “Dark Freedom is like a moon about to give birth to stars; the other books I have written will rise soon. As the needle moves, the thread automatically follows.”

‎   ‎F. Shelton Gonkerwon is a Liberian journalist, poet, and author who lived through the country’s 14-year civil war. His writings reflect deep moral lessons and historical insights drawn from personal experience. He holds a bachelor of arts in political science with a minor in mass communication from the University of Liberia, and has published several literary works, including collections of poems and words of wisdom.
