The Press and Public Affairs departments of the Liberian Senate and the House of Representatives say their attentions have been drawn to a pronouncement by a group calling itself the Economic Freedom Fighters, threatening what it calls unspecified actions on the grounds of the Capitol Building.
A press release under the signatures of Senate Acting Press Director, Alfred Johnson, and House Press Director, Nelson Garr, said the recent action by the group has no place in any democratic space and, as such, the security unit on the grounds of the Capitol Building will not continence any action that has the proclivity of undermining the peace and tranquility of the country.
The directors warned the group that if it has any claim against the National Legislature the court is the remedy, and not violence as demonstrated in recent times.
The release further stated that, though the Liberian Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly, the execution of this right must be done consistence with law, noting that same does not in any way interfere with rights of others.
It can be recalled that in the most recent past the group exhibited lawlessness on the grounds of the Capitol Building, brutalized members of the Legislative Guide Service (LGS) and chained the main entrance to obstruct legislative functions.
