The prestigious awards event is fully endorsed by the Ghanaian Ministry of Energy, its allied agencies and the World Energy Council (Ghana), and aims to recognize key stakeholders, organizations and individuals contributing immensely to the development of the energy sector.
The 2023 Awards, which will be held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana, is under the theme, “Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework: Sector Institutions as Building Blocks for the 2030—2040 Targets”.
As the inaugural (first) West African CEO to receive such a prestigious and competitive accolade in the region, Captan will assume the distinguished role of guest of honor at the event, joining His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana, who will be the special guest of honor for the momentous occasion.
In the official letter of invitation to Captan, the organizers said, “We are humbled and honored to invite you as a Guest of Honor for this year’s event. In recognition of your positive contributions to Liberia’s energy sector journey, the Ghana Energy Awards will present you with the West Africa Exceptional Energy Leadership Award. The Award is a testament to the remarkable milestones achieved as the Chief Executive Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation and the Millennium Challenge Account-Liberia. As an Awards Scheme, we believe this acknowledgment would serve as an example to other sub-regional leaders.”
To select the deserving individual for the regional award, which is the first of its kind, the Ghana Energy Awards, organized by the Energy Media Group and the West Africa Power and Petroleum Chamber, formed a profound partnership to limelight and celebrate the exceptional chief executive officers of oil, gas, power and petroleum institutions across the West African region. Accordingly, the comprehensive selection process identified 32 CEOs hailing from 14 West African nations, following intensive in-person validation meetings, thereby showcasing their outstanding leadership qualities within the energy sector.
A team of astute technical researchers (mixed-nationals) from the Energy Media Group and the West Africa Power and Petroleum Chambers meticulously undertook a comprehensive research endeavor, involving in-country on-site visits, one-on-one interviews, background checks, desk evaluations and an in-depth comparative analysis of gathered data. Each researcher produced a realistic but compelling literature report through info-graphics and presented to an independent panel.
After the intensive endeavor, the findings unveiled Monie R. Captan, CEO of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, as the preeminent candidate among the 32 CEOs across the West African region, demonstrating excellence across five pivotal criteria: exemplary institutional leadership; remarkable reduction of revenue losses and the substantial growth of revenue; remarkable increment of the customer base and exceptional energy accessibility, expansion, transmission and distribution plans; highly effective collaboration with regional counterparts and the successful mobilization of resources from donors; and enhanced maintenance of technical infrastructure and substantial investments and usage of local human capital.
In acknowledgment these outstanding achievements by the compelling analysis, the Ghana Energy Awards will confer the West Africa Exceptional Leadership Award upon Monie R. Captan during the Ghana Energy Awards ceremony, scheduled for November 17, 2023 at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana.
Captan was appointed by His Excellency President George Manneh Weah on July 7, 2021 as Chairman of the Board of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), and since then he has used his expertise and connections to revive the once dying institution, ensuring vibrancy and good work ethics at the workplace, thus resulting into several regional partnership and near-stable electricity for the country.
