The Liberia National Police (LNP) has apprehended Gao Feng, also known as “Barry” and dubbed “The Real Minister of Mines”, following an open arrest order issued by the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Gbarpolu County.

Feng was brought before the 16th Judicial Circuit Court by the police. While seated on the prisoner bench, he appeared remarkably nonchalant, laughing and sharing jokes with those present in the courtroom.

Gao Feng has gained notoriety as the most infamous figure in illicit mining in Liberia since its establishment in 1847.

The Ministry of Justice has charged him with economic sabotage, tax evasion, and criminal conspiracy for conducting illicit mining operations in Gbarpolu County without proper licensing, defrauding the government of an estimated US$30,000,000.00.

Investigation by the Ministry of Mines and Energy has revealed that Feng and his associates have employed over 100 excavators and 50 washing plants for illicit mining activities. These operations span multiple counties, including Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, Montserrado, Margibi, Bong, Lofa, Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Grand Bassa, and Maryland. Specifically, in Gbarpolu County alone, Feng has been found to operate 17 excavators and 9 washing plants without proper licenses since March 2023.

Gao Feng has earned the moniker, “The Real Minister of Mines”, due to his alleged influence over the issuance and revocation of mining licenses. He is accused of directing subordinate officials to approve licenses for individuals of his choosing and to revoke licenses at his whim. There are even claims that he has boasted about relocating the Executive Mansion if valuable minerals are found beneath it.

Despite facing serious charges, Gao Feng entered the courtroom with an air of confidence, seemingly believing that his wealth and influence would protect him from justice.

Authorities remain vigilant in ensuring that the justice system remains uncompromised, and that Gao Feng faces the full extent of the law for his alleged crimes.
