The plenary of the House of Representatives has unanimously acknowledged a timetable released by the National Elections Commission (NEC) for the conduct of the 2023 voter registration, but wants the NEC Commissioners to appear to explain in clear tone the process.

The lawmakers said, in order to have them properly explain to their constituents the biometric voter registration process, the NEC must appear before them to provide further clarity.

In a communication to the august body Thursday, February 2, 2023, the National Elections Commission (NEC), says eligible Liberians (18 years and above) are expected to participate in the voter registration process beginning March 20, 2023 and ending May 11, 2023.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) is an autonomous public commission that is responsible to conduct elections for all elective public offices and to administer and enforce all elections laws throughout the Republic of Liberia.

The NEC says the process will be done in two phases.

“Phase One – If you live in Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi and Montserrado counties your registration will start on March 20, 2023, and end on April 9, 2023,” the commission added.

The electoral body said phase two will consider Bong, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Lofa, Maryland, Nimba, Rivercess, River Gee, and Sinoe counties, beginning April 21, 2023, and will end on May 11, 2023.

The NEC further noted that it will use a new system called Biometric Voter Registration System (BVR).

“Biometric relies on unique human physical characteristics, such as fingerprints and facial recognition,” it explained.

The Commission warned that double or multiple registration is a crime punishable by law.

Meanwhile, the National Elections Commission (NEC) is calling on the public to take advantage of the process upon its commencement.

The NEC Commissioners are expected to appear before the plenary on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
