House To Grant Harbel Community College A University Charter

The House of Representatives has forwarded to its Education and Public Administration, Ways, Means and Finance and Judiciary committees “An Act to Repeal the 2012 Act Creating the Harbel College and to Establish in Lieu Thereof Margibi University and Grant it a Charter”.

   The plenary’s decision was triggered by a communication from Margibi County’s electoral district #2 Representative, Ivar K. Jones, submitting for legislative action the Margibi University Bill, craving the indulgence of the House of Representatives to repeal “The 2012 Act Creating the Harbel College and to Establish in Lieu Thereof Margibi University and Grant it a Charter”.

   The lawmaker stated in his communication that the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia guarantees equal access to educational opportunities and facilities for all of its citizenry, with Margibi County being strategically situated as the oldest agriculture industrial region of Liberia, with over 121,789 students enrolled in 509 schools across the county; its high schools graduate an average of 3,000 students annually and their desire to be admitted into tertiary education programs cannot be over emphasized; realizing the high level of illiteracy in Liberia which contravenes the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as well as the “Pro Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD)” promulgated by this government.

   Representative Jones craved the indulgence of plenary to repeal “The 2012 Act Creating the Harbel College and to Establish in Lieu Thereof Margibi University And Grant It A Charter”.

   Following the reading, Maryland County’s electoral district #1 Representative, P. Mike Jury, proffered a motion forwarding the instrument to the committees on Education and Public Administration, Ways, Means and Finance and Judiciary to report within a week.
