As a way of commemorating Thanksgiving Day in Liberia and, at the same time, memorializing the Diwali Festival (Festival of Light), Jeety has again come to the aid of inmates languishing at the South Beach Prison by providing nutritional food and drinks for them on a humanitarian basis.

This year, Thanksgiving Day and Diwali Festival were both celebrated on Thursday, November 4, 2021, with the former Indian Consul General using the opportunity to, again, identify with less privileged Liberians and feeding them with home-prepared meal.

He provided for the inmates prepared home food, water, soft-drink, cake, etc., and underscored that it was his way of identifying with them and commemorating the two festivals.

In remarks, Jeety said, “I’m again here today, on Thanksgiving Day and Diwali, the Festival of Lights in India, to celebrate with the inmates of the Monrovia Central Prison. The Festival of Diwali is celebrated throughout the length and breadth of India, and it is very fortunate that it has fell on the same day that we are celebrating Thanksgiving in Liberia.

“We have also come to celebrate both the days with the inmates, and have brought them food, water, soft-drink and cake. We also brought plates for them. When we came here the last time we observed that the plates in which the inmates were served were broken, and so we decided to bring with us 1,200 pieces for them,” Jeety noted amidst rousing ovation from the audience.

He said, “We believe it is blessed to give than to receive; so, we come here on a regular basis to receive the blessing of God, as we believe we are doing God’s way.”

Jeety expressed thanks and appreciation to the Superintendent of the Monrovia Central Prison, Varney Lake, and the Deputy for Administration, Joel Justin G. Juah, for all the support they have given him to perform God’s work.

On behalf of the Monrovia Central Prison and the inmates, Lake received the donated items and rained praises on Jeety for always reaching out to them. He prayed that God continues to bestow his blessings on Jeety.

Jeety is the known name for the former Indian Consul General in Liberia, Upjit Singh Sachdeva.

Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, notably Newar Buddhists. The festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika.

Also, Thanksgiving Day was legislated in 1883 by the National Legislature. The purpose of the day is for Liberia and its people to appreciate God’s work in Liberia.
