The Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Mohammed M. Sheriff, has disclosed that they are about to bring in modern smart meter to reduce power theft across the country.

Speaking during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Tuesday, April 7, 2025, MD Sheriff said the institution is in the process of introducing a strong monitoring system that will enable all electricity meters to be tracked directly from its main office.

According to him, it is also intended to address long-standing challenges associated with illegal connections and power theft, which continue to impact the corporation’s operation and revenue.

He said the smart meter system will allow for real-time monitoring of electricity use, making it easier to detect irregularities and ensure accurate billing for customers.

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) further disclosed that it is increasing power imports and expanding access to meet rising demand and current capacity stands at about 94 megawatts, while demand could reach 250 megawatts this year.

He also cited power theft and losses as major challenges, but assured the public of continued improvements.
