Cogent information received by the Hot Pepper has revealed that report circulating in some media outlets that the US visa of Foreign Minister, H.E. Amb. Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. was revoked is false and malicious, only intended to spew out misinformation to smear the hard-earned character of Minister Kemayah. According to a high-placed source close to Foreign Minister Kemayah, the Foreign Minister underwent a minor surgery at a London clinic, is fast recovering and may be discharged from the clinic soon, following which he will be back in the country by the end of the week. The source said Foreign Minister Kemayah sent a note verbal to the US embassy informing them that Deputy Minister for Administration, Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer, was nominated by the Dean of the Cabinet to form part of the delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to participate and represent Minister Kemayah in all meetings at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Summit in New York, USA. The source said Foreign Minister Kemayah is in a London clinic where he is undergoing treatment, and is fast responding. The source disclosed that he will be back on his feet at the shortest possible time, according to his doctor. On the issue of the Foreign Minister signing a gay rights document in the Republic of Zambia, the Hot Pepper’s finding revealed that it is disinformation and misinformation, only meant to be used for propaganda during this election season. At the ministerial level of the African Region Component of the Second Summit for Democracy in Lusaka, Republic of Zambia, early this year, Foreign Minister Kemayah underscored that Liberia continues to record significant gains under the astute leadership of His Excellency President Dr. George Manneh Weah towards strengthening democracy and defending it against authoritarianism. Foreign Minister Kemayah further noted that the Government of Liberia (GOL) under President Weah is relentlessly committed to continue consolidating and deepening the fight against corruption, dismantling the culture of impunity and strengthening the capacity of integrity institutions and the electoral system. He added that the Weah Administration is fully committed to promoting political freedom and fundamental human rights through relevant legislative reform and robust impartial adherence to both domestic and international laws and best practices. Foreign Minister Kemayah explained that the government recent amendment of the 2008 Act Creating the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), granting the entity unrestricted direct and immediate prosecutorial powers to intensify the fight against systemic corruption, money laundering, financing international terrorism and other abuses is a clear manifestation of its determination to uphold and strengthen democracy and good governance. The Dean of the Cabinet then used the occasion to share key achievements and laudable concrete actions taken by the government in the last few years to consolidate democracy in Liberia. Liberia’s chief envoy made these remarks recently at the Ministerial Level of the African Region Component of the Second Summit for Democracy in Lusaka, Republic of Zambia, held under the Theme, β€œFree, Fair and Transparent Elections”. β€œThe call for resignation by the Liberian leader is intended to disassociate the fiduciary duty of trust, integrity and loyalty, expected to be owed by appointed public officials to the people of Liberia, from their personal desires to contest election, with the aim to safeguard against such desires being at the expense of public resources; as well to create a level-playing political field to prevent unfair and undue advantages,” Minister Kemayah mentioned. Liberian Chief Diplomat said with the unreserved and strong support of His Excellency President Dr. Weah, the National Elections Commission (NEC) launched the first-ever Biometric Voter Registration and Biometric Voting System in March of this year. He stated that this is the first in the history, aimed at improving the electoral process, modernizing electoral rolls; and ensuring voter equality, based on the principle of β€œOne Voter, One Vote”. According to him, the holding of democratic, free, fair, peaceful, transparent, inclusive and credible elections cannot be possible without an exhaustive, credible and reliable electoral system to conduct it adding β€œthe modernization of the electoral roll is prerequisite to this realization”. Minister Kemayan further indicated that in his continued efforts to sustain, protect and promote the independence of integrity institutions, His Excellency President Dr. Weah on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, vetoed several and specific portions of recent amendments to the New Elections Law of Liberia passed by the National Legislature on February 24, 2022, which appeared to be in conflict with the Constitution of Liberia and other relevant existing laws. The foreign Minister also mentioned that Liberia remains deeply concerned about the state of democracy in the West African sub-region, especially the security and political situations in our neighboring State of Guinea, and the West African states of Burkina Faso and Mali as well as other conflict areas on the African Continent and the world at large. The Dean of the Cabinet told the Regional Summit that Liberia reaffirms its condemnation in the strongest term of any unconstitutional change of Government, and the change of any constitutional term limit to continue in power. He said Liberia has always, and will continue to collaborate with all sub-regional and continental bodies and other international institutions such as the Mano River Union (MRU), ECOWAS, AU, UN, among others, to combat corruption, money laundering and terrorism; promote, protect and defend democracy. He further recounted that since the ascendency of President Weah to power, there is no political prisoner and prisoner of conscience in Liberia, adding that Liberia’s upcoming Presidential and Legislative Elections in October this year will be crucial to the consolidation of peace, stability, development and flourishing democracy. Commenting on the issue of the Republic of Ukraine, Minister Kemayah said he is of the strongest belief that an attack on one democracy is an attack on all; especially in the case of an unprovoked attack. β€œLet me remind all of us distinguished delegates at this Ministerial level component of the Second Summit for Democracy that democracy in Ukraine has been under an unprovoked aggression since February 24, 2022 by the Russian Federation,” the Foreign Minister emphasized. The Liberian Chief Envoy urged his fellow delegates at this summit and their respective Governments to see as a necessary imperative, to stand with the Democratic Government and People of Ukraine. β€œIn furtherance of this premise, we call on all of us delegates and our respective countries and the World Community of Democracy as a whole to comprehensively support the Ten (10)-Point Peace Plan of His Excellency President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and the Government and People of Ukraine, as doing so, will no doubt, be in defense and support of democracy, not only in Ukraine, but globally,” Minister Kemayah stressed further.
