The President of the National Port Truckers Association of Liberia (NAPTAL), Abraham K. Kamara, has resigned his post. According to the former President, his resignation is intended to unite the association and the Union of Truckers in Liberia.

Kamara made the assertion over the weekend when he presented his letter to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the association. He noted that since he won the election in 2019, some members of the association have refused to accept him as president, going to the extent of organizing the National Truckers Union, which has led to a number of companies buying their own trucks. He underscored that the situation has undermined the intent of the association.

He pointed out that the constitution of NAPTAL gives the president the right to set up an electoral body to conduct leadership elections, but disclosed that he will allow the Chairman of the Board, Layee Kamara, to do so.

“Mr. Chairman, while we believe our era was embattled to a large extent by detractors on the basis of personal hate and greed for power, we are of the strongest conviction that history will be our judge tomorrow and in the future to come,” Kamara added.

He pointed out that under his administration the association won reconciliation sports tournament for the first time in its history, built four booth shelters for all drivers and upgraded the price list for various destinations across the country, despite the prevailing economic situation confronting the nation.

According to him, seminars were organized for truck drivers for the first time, and that they were certificated by NGOs, Total Liberia and the Liberia National Police (LNP).

Kamara maintained that constant salary payment to the staff as well as giving employees and board members rice allowance was initiated for the first time under his administration.

He asserted that previous administrations were not consistent in paying the association’s taxes to the various government institutions, which led to a fine of over L$200,000.

He revealed that his administration set up a tax plan and ensured that all taxes to requisite government institutions were paid regularly and on time to avoid future embarrassment for the association.

Meanwhile, Chairman Kamara has promised to organize NAPTAL’s election within one month’s time. He noted that after the election the association will become great again for all truckers in the country.
